Mental Symptoms of Stress

In his keynote speech on the "Changing Nature of Work - Stress in the Workplace", Professor Cary L Cooper CBE highlighted the following to be mental symptoms of stress.

  1. Constant irritability with people
  2. Feeling unable to cope
  3. Lack of interest in life
  4. Constant or recurring fear of disease
  5. A feeling of being a failure
  6. A feeling of being bad or self-hatred
  7. Difficulty in making decisions
  8. A feeling of ugliness
  9. Loss of interest in other people
  10. Awareness of suppressed anger
  11. Inability to show true feelings
  12. A feeling of being the target of other people’s animosity
  13. Loss of sense of humour
  14. Feeling of neglect
  15. Dread of the future
  16. Feeling of having failed as a person or parent
  17. A feeling of having no-one to confide in
  18. Difficulty in concentrating
  19. Inability to finish one task before rushing into another
  20. An intense fear of open or enclosed spaces or of being alone
